The Albanian Coastal Trail links the stone villages above the Ionian Sea with the beaches below them: the Riviera most visitors never see from the coast road. Five of your seven nights are in one hotel in Himarë, so the bags stay put and a car takes you to the start of each walk.

The walks run downhill more often than not: three of the four coast walks finish by the sea, at Borsh, in Himarë and above Borsh again. You walk old paths between the villages, past olive terraces, oleander in the streambeds and small chapels. Most days are 8 to 12 km, with time left for a swim or a long lunch.

Then the trip climbs. Llogara is a pine-forested national park on the pass above the Riviera, and your last two walks are mountain days: one along the ridge west of the pass, one up to a saddle at 1,600 m under Maja e Qores. You sleep a night among the pines, and the air is noticeably cooler than in Himarë.

Spring and autumn are the seasons for this coast. April, May and early June bring wildflowers and empty paths; September and October bring a sea still warm enough to swim in. In July and August the heat on the open tracks is too much, so we do not run the tour in those months.

As on all our trips, you walk on your own, at your own pace, with the route in the app. Every transfer is booked for you, from Tirana airport on day 1 to Tirana airport on day 8, and a support line is open around the clock if anything changes.

Want the mountains too? The Albanian Alps Hiking Tour crosses from Valbona to Theth over the Valbona Pass, and in September the two fit into one trip: the Alps first, then the coast. Check the Himarë forecast on yr.no before you pack; the Llogara ridge can be cloudy and windy while the coast is in sunshine.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. You walk without a group or a guide, with the route in our navigation app and the guidebook on your phone. Both work offline, so a weak signal on the trail is not a problem.

How a self-guided tour works, step by step.

Each tour page shows two ratings from 1 to 5: fitness, for how long and steep the days are, and technical, for how rough the ground is. Nothing in Albania needs ropes or scrambling, but mountain paths are rocky and loose near the passes.

Our Hiking Difficulty Guide explains the scale. Not sure which tour suits you? Ask us.

Yes. All nights on the tour are included, with breakfast and a private room: guesthouses in the mountain villages, hotels in towns and on the coast. A few remote stops on the Peaks of the Balkans are simpler.

Each tour page shows example stays, and the exact names come with your booking confirmation. Want an upgrade or an extra night? Let us know.

Breakfast is included every day. Lunch and dinner you pay on the spot, often in cash, and your guidebook lists where to eat at each stop.

Vegetarian is easy in Albania: byrek, beans, salads, cheese and eggs are on most tables. Vegan and gluten-free take more planning in small village kitchens, so tell us when you book and we pass it on to every place you stay.

Usually not. Between mountain villages there is often no road, so you carry your own pack, and 25 to 45 litres is enough. Where a tour keeps the same hotel for several nights, your bags stay in the room.

Yes. Tours start on the day that suits you within the season, and we can add nights before, during or after the tour. Tell us your dates and we check availability.

For July and August in the Albanian Alps, book in spring: the mountain villages have few rooms. The coast in spring and autumn usually has space a few weeks ahead. Travelling sooner? Ask us what is still free.
