Are your tours guided?

No. All five are self-guided: the route is planned and every night is booked, but no group, no guide sets the pace. You leave when you like, stop where you like and walk each stage on your own schedule.

What is the fitness level?

Every tour carries a fitness rating from 1 to 5, set by our hiking experts against the rest of our tours:

Short days on easy paths, fine for anyone who walks now and then
Up to 15 km a day with some climbing, comfortable for regular walkers
Full mountain days of 15 to 20 km and around 1,000 m of ascent, best with a little training
Long days back to back for fit, experienced hikers
Alpine terrain and exposure for the very experienced

Family guesthouses in the mountain valleys and small hotels in Shkodër and on the coast, all with a private room and your own bathroom. In Theth and Valbona dinner at the house, and it is usually the best meal of the day.

On the Peaks of the Balkans loop a few of the mountain stops are simpler; the guidebook says which.

Why don't you name the guesthouse in advance?

Because the houses in Theth and Valbona are small and sell out months ahead, so we book from a vetted list in each valley instead of promising one property. You get the exact names the moment your booking is confirmed.

What if there is still snow on the Valbona Pass?

Accepted Answer

In early June it happens. If the pass is not clear on your crossing day, a local mountain guide walks it with you on the safe line, paid directly to the guide on the day; if the pass is fully closed, we route you round by road and ferry instead and the rest of the trip stays as booked. Either way you hear from us the evening before, not at the trailhead. The Theth forecast on yr.no is the one we watch.

How far in advance should I book?

By March for a July to September crossing: the valley guesthouses are small and the good ones fill first. The coast usually has room a few weeks ahead.

What happens if I need help on the trail?

Our support line is open 24 hours a day for the length of your tour, and every guesthouse host on our routes knows us.

A blister is your problem; a closed pass, a missed ferry or a lost booking is ours, and one call rearranges the day. The emergency number in Albania is 112.

Question 12

Do I need a passport or a permit?

Accepted Answer

A passport, yes; no visa for stays under 90 days for EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens. Anyone else applies through Albania's e-visa portal.

The Peaks of the Balkans routes cross into Montenegro and Kosovo away from any border post, and that needs a permit from the border police of all three countries. We apply for it as part of your booking; you carry a copy on the trail. The other three tours need nothing.

Do I need cash?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and more than you think. The currency is the lek; euros are accepted in the valleys; no cash machine in Theth or Valbona.

What runs on cash: dinner and drinks at the guesthouses, the ferry, the van, the café hut at the top of the pass. Draw it in Shkodër.

Can you accommodate my food restrictions?

Accepted Answer

Vegetarian is easy in Albania: byrek, beans, salads, cheese and eggs are on every table. Vegan and gluten-free take more planning in a guesthouse kitchen, and it works when the host knows in advance. Tell us when you book and every house on your route hears about it.

Are these tours kid-friendly?

Accepted Answer

The coastal trail, with its short stages and a beach at the end of most of them, suits families with children who walk regularly. The pass crossing is a six-to-eight-hour day and a fair ask for teenagers who hike; the Peaks of the Balkans loops are for adults and fit older teenagers. Ask us and we will say honestly which one fits.
